Choosing to pursue citizenship in the United States may well be one of the biggest decisions you make in your lifetime. What is naturalization?

Naturalization is the process by which a foreign national or the citizen of another country becomes a citizen of the United States.

You may be eligible to begin the naturalization process if you meet the following eligibility standards:

  • You are recognized as a person of good moral character
  • You have been a lawful permanent resident or green card holder for at 5 five years, or 3 years if you are married to a United States citizen
  • You have been present physically in the United States for more than 50 percent of this time
  • You are willing to take an oath of loyalty to the United States
  • You pass a test demonstrating basic understanding of the United States government and history
  • You can demonstrate a capable working knowledge of the English language

What does it mean to be a person of good moral character?

One of the fundamental standards in order to be eligible for citizenship in the United States is that you must be a person of good moral character. If you have committed crime of moral turpitude, practiced polygamy, committed a gambling offense, committed adultery resulting in divorce, failed to pay taxes, smuggled a foreign national into the U.S., failed to support your family members who are dependent on you, or another offense, you may be ineligible.

Do I need to hire a naturalization attorney?

Hiring a Raleigh immigration lawyer is not required for your citizenship journey, but it is strongly recommended. Processing your citizenship application can take about six to seven months. It is important to make sure that everything is done properly.

Many people choose not to work with a lawyer through this process, and - while some are successful - many run into problems that result in the extended delay or even denial of their application. Unfortunately, many people whose applications are denied find themselves in removal proceedings. Our attorneys have the experience necessary to protect your interests.
