When travelling through the United States from one country to another, a C-1 visa is required, unless you are a citizen from one of the visa waiver countries. If you are travelling with family, such as a spouse or your children, they also require a C visa to transit through the United States. Immigration officers at the port of entry are authorized to admit people holding C-1 transit visas for up to 29 days.
This is for those who are landing in the United States and do not want to wait at the airport until their next flight. The C visa allows you to exit the airport and sight see, visit friends or family or shop while you wait for your next flight, which may include a long layover. If your travel plans include staying in the US in one place for even one day, you should apply for a B1 or B2 visa.
